Steak Restaurant Mordialloc
Wood & Bone is a wood-fired steak restaurant near Mordialloc — about twelve minutes north, at 4 Tabbita Street, Moorabbin. Sher Wagyu, porterhouse and scotch fillet over timber, plus a twelve-hour smokehouse, with free off-street parking.
Twelve minutes, and why they are worth it
Mordialloc is further from us than most suburbs on this list, and we are including it because people already make the trip. Twelve minutes up Nepean Highway is not nothing, so the food at the other end has to justify it.
What justifies it is a grill burning actual timber rather than gas. That is a genuinely uncommon thing in this part of Melbourne, and it produces a crust on a porterhouse that a gas grill cannot reproduce regardless of how good the chef is.
Main Street is for lunch. This is for dinner.
Mordialloc has something most suburbs on this list do not: a working foreshore. Main Street, the pier, the creek and the beach make it one of the better places in the bay to spend a Saturday afternoon, and the food along the strip reflects that — fish and chips, cafés, casual places built for people in shorts.
That is a different proposition from a proper dinner. When Mordialloc wants a sit-down evening with a wine list and a steak that took some care, the strip is not really built for it, and twelve minutes north is.
Summer, specifically
Mordialloc bookings spike through summer, which makes sense — a long afternoon at the beach or on the creek generally ends with people hungry and thoroughly disinclined to cook anything.
Early evening tables in January and February book out faster than the equivalent midweek slots in winter. If you are planning a beach day and a dinner after it, book the dinner first.
Winter runs the other way and is arguably the better time to come. A wood fire and a twelve-hour brisket make considerably more sense in July than in January, and a Wednesday table in the middle of winter is the easiest booking of the year.
The drive and the parking
Straight up Nepean Highway. Tabbita Street runs off the main road — lit and signed, but easy to overshoot in the dark.
Free off-street parking directly outside, which after a day of finding a park anywhere near the Mordialloc foreshore in summer will feel like a small mercy. Mordialloc station is four stops from Moorabbin on the Frankston line if you would rather not drive.
What is on
Porterhouse with the fat cap rendered over flame, scotch fillet, eye fillet, and Sher Wagyu from a Victorian full-blood producer, all over wood. Cuts change with what the supplier has, so ask what came in this week.
From the smoker: brisket in the night before and out twelve hours later, pork ribs, smoked lamb and duck. Made in finite amounts and capable of running out on a busy Saturday.
The seafood is worth mentioning here in particular. Grilled prawns, salt and pepper calamari and kingfish handled lightly — bought on what is good rather than on a standing order, which for a suburb that knows its seafood is the relevant point.
Functions
The venue is available exclusively Sunday, Monday and Tuesday. For a Mordialloc birthday or engagement where guests are coming from across the bayside suburbs, a central function venue with free parking is easier on everyone than somewhere on a foreshore strip in summer.
Groups from roughly twenty up to the full room, with menus built around your group rather than picked from a tier. Call 0477 099 177 or email to enquire.
Summer function dates go the same way as summer tables, which is to say earlier than people expect. If you are planning something for January, enquire in October.
Hours and booking
Lunch Wednesday to Friday, dinner Wednesday to Saturday, closed to the public Sunday to Tuesday. Book Friday and Saturday evenings, and book early through summer.
Call 0477 099 177 or reserve online. If you are bringing a group above eight, ring rather than booking online so the room can be set properly.
