Birthdays & Celebrations
A restaurant with fresh produce and service
Wood & Bone is a birthday party venue in Melbourne's south-east, at 4 Tabbita Street, Moorabbin. The whole restaurant is available Sunday, Monday and Tuesday for milestone birthdays, 21sts, engagements and christenings — wood-fired menus, your own music, and free parking.
A sit-down meal, not a room with canapés
There is a version of the milestone celebration that involves a function room, a tray of arancini circulating, and everyone standing up for four hours. It has its place. It is not what happens here.
Wood & Bone is a restaurant, so a celebration here is built around people sitting down and eating something worth sitting down for. Wood-fired steak, smokehouse boards down the middle of the table, and enough time to actually have the conversations you invited everyone for.
Milestone birthdays
Thirtieths, fortieths, fiftieths and sixtieths are the most common bookings, and they share a requirement: the guest of honour wants to talk to everyone, which is impossible if the room is loud and the seating is fixed.
Exclusive hire solves both. There is no second sitting waiting for the table, so people move around, sit somewhere different after the mains, and the night runs at whatever pace it wants to.
For a birthday party with parents and grandparents in the same room as friends, a proper dinner is usually the thing that makes both groups comfortable. Nobody is shouting over music and nobody is stuck standing.
21st birthday venues and 18ths
A 21st here is a genuine dinner rather than a hall with a hired sound system. That suits some families and not others, and it is worth being honest about which.
It works if the plan is fifty people, a real meal, speeches, and a night that ends at a reasonable hour. It works less well if the plan is a dance floor and a DJ until two, and we would rather tell you that now than take the booking and disappoint you.
Free parking matters more for this age group than most people account for — a venue where parents can drop off and collect without negotiating city traffic removes a genuine logistical headache.
Engagements
An engagement party is the one celebration where the food is genuinely part of the point. It is the first event two families attend together, and a shared table does more for that than a room where everyone stands in the group they arrived with.
Shared smokehouse boards work particularly well here. People pass things, reach across, and talk to whoever is next to them rather than whoever they came with.
Speeches at an engagement are usually shorter and more nervous than at a wedding, which is an argument for doing them early rather than leaving them to build all evening. Between the boards and the mains is about right.
Christenings and family lunches
Sunday functions suit christening lunches especially well — the venue is available, the timing works around a morning service, and there is room for a pram and a great-grandparent in the same space without anyone climbing over anything.
The kitchen will do smaller portions for children rather than producing a separate beige menu, which in practice most parents prefer.
The room is yours, including the details
Because nobody else is in the building, you can decorate, run your own playlist, arrange the tables how you want them and set up beforehand. Talk to us about access times when you book.
Cake is welcome. Bring it, and we will store it, cut it and bring it out when you want it rather than at a time that suits the kitchen.
Same for a photographer, a slideshow or someone's uncle who insists on doing a speech with props. It is your room for the evening and we are not going to be precious about how you use it.
Timing a celebration on a Sunday or Monday
People assume a weekend-adjacent function is impossible. In practice a Sunday evening celebration works better than a Saturday one for most groups — nobody is competing with other plans, the venue is entirely yours, and guests are not arriving already three events into a weekend.
Sunday lunch functions suit families with young children particularly well. Monday and Tuesday evenings tend to suit smaller, older groups and anyone marking something quietly.
Numbers, menus and enquiries
Groups from roughly twenty people up to full venue capacity. Below twenty, a large table during normal Wednesday-to-Saturday service is usually better value than exclusive hire, and we will say so.
Menus are built with you. Dietary requirements go in at the enquiry stage. Call 0477 099 177 or email info@woodandbone.com.au with your date and rough numbers.

The wood-fired dinner menu and shared smokehouse boards are both available for any celebration. Planning a 21st specifically? Read 21st birthday venues in the south-east — or check a date directly.
FAQ
Do you host birthday parties in Melbourne's south-east?
Yes. The full venue in Moorabbin is available for exclusive hire Sunday, Monday and Tuesday for milestone birthdays and celebrations.
Is Wood & Bone suitable for a 21st birthday?
Yes, if the plan is a sit-down dinner with speeches. It is less suited to events built around a dance floor and a late DJ set.
Can we hold an engagement party here?
Yes. Shared table service works particularly well for engagements, where two families are meeting properly for the first time.
Do you host christenings?
Yes. Sunday functions suit christening lunches, with space for prams and multiple generations.
Can we bring our own cake?
Yes. We will store it, cut it and bring it out when you want it.
Can we decorate the venue and play our own music?
Yes. Because the restaurant is exclusively yours, you can decorate the room and run your own playlist. Ask about set-up access times.
What is the minimum number for a birthday function?
Around twenty. Below that, a large table during normal service is usually better value than exclusive hire.
Do you cater for children at family celebrations?
Yes. The kitchen provides smaller portions of the main menu rather than a separate children's menu.
