Of every suburb in this part of the bay, Highett is the one we are nearest to. Four minutes from the Highett Road shops, less if the lights on Nepean Highway are kind. For a good number of Highett residents this is genuinely the local, in the sense that it is closer than most of the places they would name if asked.

That proximity changes how people use it. Highett bookings skew midweek and spontaneous — a Wednesday dinner decided at five o'clock rather than a Saturday planned a fortnight out. Which is exactly what a local restaurant should be for.

What Highett Road does and does not have

The Highett strip has become considerably better over the past decade. There is good coffee, there is Asian food worth the walk, and there are a couple of places that do a genuinely respectable weekend brunch.

What there is not, and never has been, is somewhere cooking steak over actual wood. That gap is the reason this page exists — a suburb of Highett's size supporting no dedicated steakhouse means everyone drives, and four minutes is a short drive by any measure.

Getting here from Highett

Straight down Highett Road and across, or via Nepean Highway depending on which end of the suburb you are starting from. Tabbita Street runs off the main road and is easy to overshoot at night — the building is lit and signed, and if you reach the end of the street you have gone slightly too far.

Highett station is one stop from Moorabbin on the Frankston line, and Moorabbin station is a short walk from the door. Free off-street parking outside if you drive, with no meters and no time limits.

Morris Moor is around the corner

The Morris Moor precinct sits between Highett and here, and it has changed the character of this pocket entirely. What was a former industrial site now pulls people across from Highett and Cheltenham in a way nothing in the area did fifteen years ago.

If you have been to Morris Moor for something during the day, we are a few minutes further on. A fair number of our early-evening tables are people who were already out this way.

A note on Highett's rebuild

The old Highett industrial land has been going through a long conversion, and the residential density around the station has climbed noticeably. More people, most of them younger than the suburb's historical average, and a corresponding shortage of places to take them to dinner.

Restaurants tend to lag population by several years. Highett is currently in that gap, which is inconvenient for residents and is why a four-minute drive is worth knowing about.

What we cook

Porterhouse with the fat cap on, scotch fillet, eye fillet and Sher Wagyu — a Victorian full-blood producer — all over a grill burning actual timber rather than gas. The crust that produces is deeper and slightly sweeter than anything a gas grill manages.

Alongside it a smokehouse running brisket, pork ribs, smoked lamb and duck, all low and slow, all started the night before. These are finite: when the smoker is empty that item is done for the night, and on Saturdays that can be by nine.

There is seafood, there is a proper vegetarian main, and there is a short wine list weighted toward reds with enough structure to survive a wood-fire crust.

Functions for Highett locals

Sunday, Monday and Tuesday the restaurant closes to the public and is available for exclusive hire. For a Highett birthday or work dinner, a function venue four minutes away with free parking removes most of the logistics people usually accept as unavoidable.
