Steak Restaurant Bentleigh
Wood & Bone is a wood-fired steak restaurant near Bentleigh — about six minutes west along Centre Road, at 4 Tabbita Street, Moorabbin. Sher Wagyu, porterhouse and scotch fillet over timber, smokehouse brisket and ribs, and free off-street parking.
Centre Road does everything except this
Bentleigh has one of the better eating strips in the south-east and it is not close. Centre Road runs Italian, Greek, Vietnamese, Japanese, a serious amount of brunch and at least three places doing pizza properly.
What it does not run is a steakhouse. Not a pub bistro with a Tuesday special — somewhere cooking porterhouse over actual timber with a wine list built for it. For that, Bentleigh drives, and the nearest option is six minutes west along the road you are already on.
Six minutes, and the parking question
Straight out along Centre Road and into Tabbita Street. It is a short enough run that people who would not normally drive to dinner do it without thinking about it.
Parking is the part Bentleigh locals mention most. Anyone who has circled Centre Road at seven on a Friday looking for a space knows the specific frustration involved. Here it is free, off-street and directly outside the door, with no meters and no time limits.
By train, Moorabbin is two stops from Bentleigh on the Frankston line and the station is a short walk from us.
The Bentleigh dinner problem
Ask a Bentleigh household where they go for a proper dinner and you will get one of three answers: somewhere on Centre Road they have been to many times, somewhere in the city they visit twice a year, or a shrug.
The middle option — a restaurant that is a genuine occasion but is also close enough to use on a Thursday — is the one the suburb is short of. Six minutes is close enough to be that, and the cooking is serious enough to justify it.
What we cook, and why it is different
The grill burns wood. Not gas with a decorative log — actual timber, lit early and managed through service. It runs hotter and less evenly than gas, which is exactly why the crust is better.
Porterhouse with the fat cap left on and rendered over flame, scotch fillet for marbling at a lower price, eye fillet for tenderness, and Sher Wagyu from the Victorian full-blood producer that supplies a fair number of the restaurants on Melbourne's best-of lists.
Then a smoker running on the opposite principle — twelve hours, low temperature, brisket that goes in the night before. Ribs, smoked lamb and duck alongside it. These are made in finite amounts, and on a Saturday the brisket can be finished by nine.
The wine list is short by design and weighted toward reds with enough tannin to survive a wood-fire crust. Bentleigh has good bottle shops and a population that knows what it likes, so a list that cannot justify itself would be noticed quickly.
Bringing a group from Bentleigh
Larger tables work well midweek, and the room handles a group of ten without the rest of the restaurant suffering for it. Order shared smokehouse boards across the middle before the steaks land — it is a better night than everyone ordering individually and comparing.
For anything above twenty, Sunday to Tuesday the venue is available exclusively. A function venue a few minutes from Bentleigh with free parking is a genuinely different proposition from booking a partitioned room in the city — you get the whole room rather than a section of a working restaurant, and nobody starts hovering at the ninety-minute mark because the table is needed for a second sitting.
Bentleigh does milestone birthdays well and has nowhere obvious to hold them. Thirtieths and fortieths are among the most common function bookings we take from the suburb.
Practical detail
Lunch Wednesday to Friday, dinner Wednesday to Saturday. No Saturday lunch. Book Friday and Saturday evenings on 0477 099 177; midweek is generally relaxed enough to walk in.
Vegetarian and gluten-free are straightforward with notice — mention it when you book rather than when you sit down.
If you are coming from the McKinnon end of Bentleigh, allow an extra couple of minutes and take Nepean Highway rather than Centre Road at peak.
See our wood-fired steakhouse and the dinner menu in full, or find out about the smokehouse alongside it. For groups, exclusive venue hire runs Sunday to Tuesday. Nearby, there is also diners from Ormond and diners from Highett.
